How Often Should You Have an Eye Exam?
Because your vision can change at a relatively rapid pace, it’s a good idea to visit the eye doctor about once a year for a regular checkup. If you notice changes in your vision, more frequent headaches, eye strain, or trouble seeing at night, schedule sooner rather than waiting for your next exam. People with diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or a strong prescription may need more frequent monitoring.
What to Expect During Your Exam
Your eye exam typically includes a review of your health history and visual needs, a vision test, a refraction to determine your prescription, eye muscle and focusing tests, eye pressure measurement, and an evaluation of the front and back of the eye. Your doctor may recommend dilation to get a better view of the retina and optic nerve. We’ll answer any questions about dilation, insurance, and payment when you schedule.
Detecting Vision Problems Early
Eye exams identify common refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia, and they can uncover eye diseases before symptoms appear. Visit our vision conditions page to learn more.
From Your Exam to the Perfect Pair
Once your prescription is ready, our licensed opticians help you choose and fit prescription glasses, select the right lens options, or start wearing contact lenses. We accept most vision insurance plans and Flexible Spending Accounts.
Pediatric and Kids Eye Exams
The Canton office offers eye exams for children ages 5 and older. For infant and toddler exams, contact our Brockton or East Bridgewater locations. About one in four children develop a vision problem, and school screenings can miss issues like farsightedness. After the exam, our opticians can fit durable children’s eyeglasses, including Essilor Stellest lenses for myopia control.
